Mission and vision

Together, we are not just building a monastery — we are realizing a sacred vision and opening a gateway to enlightened activity in this world.

Zangdok Palri, the Glorious Copper-Colored Mountain, is the pure land of Guru Padmasambhava — the great master who brought Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet.

The Zangdok Palri project and monastery are not merely physical undertakings — they are a sacred manifestation of Guru Rinpoche’s pure land on Earth. Rooted in the Dudjom Tersar lineage, this living mandala embodies devotion, preservation, and the collective aspiration to benefit all beings.

This once-in-a-lifetime project invites Dharma practitioners worldwide to help create a spiritual sanctuary for preserving, practicing, and spreading the Nyingma tradition. Through your offerings and prayers, the Zangdok Palri project becomes a gateway of blessings, healing, and enlightened activity.

Located at Dundul Raptenling Monastery in Odisha, India — founded by His Holiness Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche and now led by Lama Sonam Tashi Rinpoche.

Zangdok Palri is envisioned as a spiritual hub for the global Nyingma, Dudjom Tersar, and global sanghas.

Since design and engineering began in 2016, and ground was broken in March 2017, the project has overcome many challenges due to its remote location and complexity. Today, more than 80% is complete, with the foundation and outer structure already built. The next phase focuses on sacred art and interior details. With your help, we can complete construction by 2028 and open the monastery to practitioners and pilgrims.

Offerings

Offer colour.Light a lamp.Plant merit.

The structure is standing. What it needs now is pigment, gold, image and garden — and hands to host the sangha when the doors open. Choose the part of the mandala you would like to complete.

Offer the final touch

This final stage includes the completion of the outer painting and sacred murals, along with the creation of peaceful gardens and outdoor spaces for meditation and reflection.

Every offering, of any size, helps bring this sacred environment closer to completion.

Make an offering

Join the monthly light offering

Join us in offering butter lamps on each Guru Rinpoche Day. Your lamp will be offered with prayers by ordained practitioners, dedicated for the benefit of all beings, and included in the monthly accumulation ceremonies. You may also include a personal name or dedication.

Make an offering

Sponsor a statue

Each sacred statue embodies enlightened qualities and becomes part of the living mandala of Zangdok Palri. By sponsoring a statue, you help complete this sacred temple, support the preservation of the Dharma, and become part of an enduring offering dedicated to the benefit of all beings.

Make an offering

Sponsor the ceremony

Support the consecration itself in March 2028 — the rites, the ritual offerings, and the hosting of the sangha and pilgrims who will gather for it.

The three storeys

A mountain you read
from the ground up

Zangdok Palri is built in three tiers, each one a body of enlightenment. The architecture is the teaching — you ascend from the form that can be met, to the form that can be seen in meditation, to the form beyond form.

Lineage blessings

Four letters
of blessing

Eminent masters of the Dudjom Tersar lineage have written in support of this project, urging the faithful to offer what they can. Their words are reproduced here in full.

  • For the benefit of all sentient beings and the Buddha Dharma, and through the abundant merit of these beings, His Holiness Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshi Dorji founded the sacred Dundul Raptenling Monastery in Odisha. Lama Sonam Tashi, with pure intention and deep commitment to serving the Buddha’s teachings, is now leading a plan to build an authentic Zangdok Palri there — for the flourishing of the Buddha Dharma and the benefit of all sentient beings in particular. Therefore, I sincerely urge all benefactors and generous individuals to offer whatever support they can.

Written by Sangay Pema Zhedpa, bearer of the name Dudjom Tulku, on the auspicious Descending Day of Lord Buddha in the Wood Sheep Year of the 17th Tibetan Rabjung cycle.

  • Lama Sonam Tashi of Dundul Raptenling Monastery — the sacred site in Odisha blessed by His Holiness Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshi Dorji Drodul Lingpa Tsel, the representative of Guru Rinpoche — has a sincere and pure aspiration to build a new Zangdok Palri there for the flourishing of the Buddha Dharma. Therefore, I respectfully urge all faithful and generous sponsors to contribute according to your capacity.

Written by Dungse Zhenphen Dawa Norbu of Yeshe Nyingpo, New York, USA, on the auspicious waxing moon of the 11th Tibetan month in the Wood Sheep Year.

    The original letter

  • As is well known, Dundul Raptenling Monastery in Odisha, East India, was established by His Holiness Jigdrel Yeshi Dorji Rinpoche. Lama Sonam Tashi, a faithful practitioner with pure intention, is now leading the effort to build a new Zangdok Palri to benefit the Buddha Dharma in general, and in particular, to renovate and further develop the sacred monastery founded by our previous Guru.

I personally offer my heartfelt appreciation for this noble endeavour and sincerely urge everyone inspired to accumulate merit to extend your support in whatever way possible.

Written by the Bhutanese meditator Garab Dorje, bearer of the Dudjom lineage name.

    The original letter

I wholeheartedly appreciate Lama Sonam Tashi, who is leading this project, for his unwavering dedication and pure intention to bring it to fruition for the benefit of the Buddha Dharma. I respectfully request all faithful individuals who wish to engage in virtuous deeds to offer your support in whatever way you can.

Frequently asked questions

Before you offer, or before you travel

If your question isn’t here, message us on WhatsApp or use the form below. We answer everything.

Zangdok Palri — the Glorious Copper-Coloured Mountain — is the pure land of Guru Padmasambhava, described in detail in the Nyingma terma literature. Temples built to that description exist across the Himalaya. This one is being built at Dundul Raptenling Monastery in Odisha, India, to fulfil the vision of Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche.
The foundation and the full outer structure are complete, including the sambhogakaya ceiling installed in June 2023 — more than 80% of the project. What remains is the sacred art and interior: colouring the outer temple, painting the murals, electrical installation, ritual objects, and landscaping the gardens.
The project is supported by Vajra Lotus Foundation, a U.S. registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax identification number 36-5143055. Donations may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. For guidance on your own situation, please speak to a tax adviser.
Offerings made through the final-phase campaign are directed to the remaining construction work: exterior colouring, sacred murals, interior finishing and the gardens. Progress is posted regularly on the monastery’s Facebook page and in the project gallery, so you can see the work you funded.
The monastery receives visitors, though the temple itself is an active construction site and access is limited. If you are planning a visit, write to us first so the monastery can advise on timing and accommodation.
The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar, with onward road travel to the monastery. All foreign visitors need an Indian visa; some areas in the region also require a Protected Area Permit, which takes time to arrange. We are preparing detailed guidance on permits, homestays, transport and local guides — register your interest below and we will send it as it is confirmed.
Lama Sonam Tashi Rinpoche, who leads Dundul Raptenling Monastery — founded by His Holiness Dudjom Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche. The project has letters of support from His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, His Holiness Shenphen Dawa Rinpoche, His Holiness Dungse Garab Dorje Rinpoche and His Holiness Kathok Situ Rinpoche.
Yes. Recitation, practice and dedication are offerings in this tradition, and the monastery welcomes them. Sharing the project with your own sangha also helps more than you might think — most people who offer heard about it from someone they trust.
