Butter Lamp Offering

On each auspicious Guru Rinpoche Day, butter lamps are offered at Zangdok Palri, the sacred pure land of Guru Rinpoche in Odisha, India.

Each lamp offered becomes part of a sacred mandala of light — offered with prayers that ignorance may be dispelled, wisdom may arise, obstacles may be purified, and all beings may find the path to liberation.

The meaning of light

A single flame
illuminates.

In many wisdom traditions, offering light symbolizes the removal of darkness — both outer darkness and the inner darkness of ignorance. A single flame can illuminate a vast space. In the same way, a single sincere act of generosity, compassion, or devotion can become a cause for immeasurable benefit.

At Zangdok Palri, every light is offered with the aspiration that wisdom may arise, obstacles may be cleared, suffering may be relieved, and the light of Dharma may remain in this world for generations to come.

Why offer monthly?

An unbroken river of light.

Making a regular light offering creates a gentle rhythm of devotion throughout the year — a repeated opportunity to remember our aspirations and dedicate merit for others.

Consistent Merit

Dedicate the merit to loved ones, whether living or passed.

Connection to Guru Rinpoche

Peace & Benefit for the World

“Monthly offerings create an unbroken river of light
— a continuing rhythm of devotion, aspiration, and compassion.”

“In this degenerate age, offering light removes obstacles, increases wisdom, and brings the swift path to realization.”
Dudjom Rinpoche
